Former Neskonlith Chief Arthur Manuel dies

CHASE, B.C. — The Neskonlith Indian Band has confirmed former Chief Arthur Manuel has died.

In a news release through the Union of BC Indian Chiefs, Manuel's family says he passed away last night, surrounded by his family.

In addition to serving as chief, Manuel was a well-known indigenous rights and environmental activist.

He was the former chair of the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council and most recently part of the Defenders of the Land.

According to the family, a wake for Manuel will be held Friday and Saturday, and a funeral service on Sunday.

All services will be held at the Adams Lake Indian Band gymnasium.

Manuel was 66.
