KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops is searching for a new fire chief.

Dale McLean has confirmed he will step down from the job at the end of the year.

McLean came to Kamloops in 2013 from Edmonton, and says becoming the chief in Kamloops was the culmination of a more than 30 year career in firefighting.

“I’ve been honoured to actually be the fire chief for Kamloops Fire Rescue. It is is an extraordinary organization. The City of Kamloops is a great employer. Kamloops itself is just a fabulous community, and I’ve enjoyed every minute I’ve been here,” said McLean

McLean adds he needs to return to Edmonton to help care for his aging parents.

“A lot of it is due to family issues back home. My parents are getting to the state where they really do need some assistance from me, so I can’t do it from here. I’ve made the decision to move back to Edmonton, and try to retire from working every day, and try to be there for them.”

“We are at the point where we have completed our five-year strategic plan, which we are presenting to council in another week or so. We are working very hard to get a collective agreement agreed to before I leave. If I can get both of those things complete, I can walk away and know we are in good hands going forward.”
