KAMLOOPS — An incredible young woman with Down syndrome is proving people with differences deserve the same opportunities as everyone else.

Dominique Baird is a ray of sunshine for the guests of the Kamloops Fairfield Inn & Suites.

The 24-year-old is a dedicated breakfast hostess, who works diligently to attend to the needs of the hotel’s customers while taking a keen interest in who she’s serving.

“It’s my dream to talk to people and talk to customers because they are my favourite and they’ve been all around the world,” she said.

Dominique has never let her Down syndrome get in the way of her goals and was even featured as a Canadian Down Syndrome Day Hero in 2012.

She has always been one to leave a lasting impression, receiving countless letters from the customers she encounters.

Her mother, Karen Baird, says Dominique has found a way to exceed expectations from the moment she was born.

“Actually I was told she wouldn’t accomplish much,” Baird said, “that she would be lethargic and probably sit in a corner with her tongue hanging out, and she’s proven all of those people completely wrong. She’s been very strong willed, very motivated, very happy and successful really.”

Dominique has often volunteered in the community, but with a steady income she is now able to make some big plans.

“I’m saving up to go to a World Down Syndrome Day conference in Scotland in two years, and I have heritage there, I’m Scottish myself,” Dominique said.

Her employment success can also be attributed to the co-workers who make her feel like a welcome addition to the team.

“Everyone’s great,” she said. “They accepted me like I’m a part of their family here at the hotel. I love my coworkers and my boss is the best.”

General Manager Steve Earl met Dominique at a job fair six months ago and quickly recognized her potential.

“She made a great impression when she came up to introduce herself to us, we called her in for an interview, and she came in with her portfolio of all of the accomplishments that she’s had, and it really was a very easy decision when we met her,” Earl said. “She makes such a positive impression on myself and it really does speak for itself.”

Dominique’s work ethic and attention to detail continue to prove that she is a capable employee, who puts a smile on the face of everyone she encounters.
