KAMLOOPS — Barb Nederpel was acclaimed as the BC NDP candidate in Kamloops-North Thompson Saturday.

The acclamation was no surprise as Nederpel was the only NDP candidate in the riding to submit her nomination papers by the Aug 19 deadline.

“I was the only candidate in this race,” Nederpel said. “There was a nominating committee that had gone out and approached around 40 people, keeping things like diversity and equity in mind. I had indicated fairly early on in the race that I was interested.

“Unfortunately, what ended up happening is because a lot of the people in the party already know me very well, they were so excited that I was stepping up that other people just stood down.”

Nederpel is a healthcare worker,  president of the Kamloops and District Labour Council, and vice president of the Hospital Employees Union.

She said she’s eager to hit the campaign trail.

“We are wasting no time,” she said, “we are going to be hitting the doors, hitting the streets, and we are going to be talking to the people in our region about the issues that will make a difference in their lives.

Nederpel said she wants to focus her efforts on education, jobs, and healthcare.

“That’s what people are bringing to me,” she said. “There’s a lot more that are going to be coming out, but I think those are the three top trends that we’re definitely talking about.”
