KAMLOOPS — Thousands gathered at the Sandman Centre today, to witness the Installation and Ordination of the new Catholic Bishop in Kamloops.

Most Reverened Joseph Nguyen was ordained Thursday afternoon, as the sixth Bishop of Kamloops. He replaces David Monroe, who has retired at the age of 75 after 14 years in Kamloops.

Nguyen spent his most recent time in the lower mainland as Vicar General for the Archdiocese of Vancouver.

Thursday, marked the first time the Installation and Ordination of a Bishop was held in Kamloops.

People travelled from all over the province, and in some cases the country, to celebrate Nguyen’s Ordination, as the head of the Roman Catholic Diocese.

Bishop Joseph Nguyen is one of 5,000 Roman Catholic Bishops in the world. He will lead a diocese with 57,000 parishioners and 20 priests, serving 67 communities.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Kamloops stretches from the Alberta border to the Pacific Coast and is larger than Cuba.
