‘I let my judgment be clouded’: text of statement from Nunavut MP Hunter Tootoo
IQALUIT, Nunavut — In a videotaped statement Wednesday, Nunavut MP Hunter Tootoo admits to a “consensual but inappropriate” relationship with an unidentified person. Here is a text of the statement from Tootoo, who returned to politics late last month after seeking treatment for addiction:
—
(I have called) … a conference to explain my reason for leaving cabinet and caucus, and told you it was for deeply personal and private issues — which it was and is. The people of Nunavut asked for and deserve further explanation. I have heard that message loud and clear.
On May 31, I voluntarily informed the prime minister that I made a mistake and regrettably engaged in a consensual but inappropriate relationship. And that is why I resigned my cabinet post and my position in caucus. I then checked myself into rehab for my addiction.
