KAMLOOPS — Health Minister Terry Lake says the consultation process has begun for safe consumption sites in Kamloops and Kelowna.

Lake says the medical health officer for Interior Health was scheduled to meet with mayor Peter Milobar yesterday, July 29, to discuss the feasibility of such a site in Kamloops, a city hit hard by overdose deaths.

He says a safe consumption site would be another weapon against the dangers of illicit drug use.

“We know that a safe consumption site isn’t a panacea, it isn’t the only answer, but it is one of the tools that we can use to reduce the harms associated with illicit drug use,” Lake said. “And it gives people a point of contact with the health system for when they’re ready to go into a recovery type of program.”
