KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Chamber of Commerce has issued a news release scolding Kamloops Councillor Donovan Cavers for his comments at last week’s hearings into the proposed Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.

The federally-convened hearings heard from a variety of community members, including First Nations leaders and local government officials.

Cavers, who was critical of the proposed expansion, explicitly asked the hearing to set aside his position as a City of Kamloops councillor and consider his opinion outside of that context.

However in a news release today, Chamber President Ryan Scorgie chided Cavers, noting the city’s position on the project is neutral, and Cavers should “be prepared to publically accept and adhere to the formal position of the organization.”

Scorgie says Cavers “seemed to show a rather pessimistic perspective on a project that will clearly bring substantial economic benefits to the residents of Kamloops.”

The chamber’s formal position supports what it calls “Canada’s responsible resource development.”
