KAMLOOPS — Safeway customers had an unpleasant surprise Friday evening when a substance similar to bear spray was used inside the store.

RCMP were called to the Safeway on Fortune Drive shortly before 8 p.m. A man had been seen by customers spraying the substance inside before leaving the store.

Staff evacuated immediately, but patrons were reportedly coughing and having difficulty breathing.

Kamloops Fire Rescue helped clear the air with the use of fans and the store was able to re-open when it was determined to be safe.
