KAMLOOPS —The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women’s basketball team will be making their fifth straight appearance in the Canada West playoffs.

The WolfPack cliniched a post season berth with a weekend sweep at home over the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves

On Saturday (Feb 6), the WolfPack downed the Timberwolves 92-60 for their seventh straight victory. That win on the Warner Rentals Court gives TRU a record of 13-3 in the Explorer Division. UNBC falls to 2-14.

“We did a lot of things really well but there are other areas where we need to improve,” said WolfPack assistant coach Chuck Ferguson. “We turned over the ball 20 times and gave up 15 offensive rebounds. That is too much. Tonight it didn’t hurt us but down the road it might. There are still a lot of work to be done before we feel we are ready for the playoffs.”

Ferguson hopes that the ‘Pack aren’t being overconfident in not being as diligent to defense as should be. “I would hope not because that means we would be taking an opponent for granted. You never want to do that. UNBC is a good team. They work hard and they work hard inside. We have to take those types of teams seriously.”

The WolfPack had four players in double digits led by Kassie Colonna (4th year, forward, Invermere, BC). Colonna was named the “TRU Bookstore/McDonalds Leader of the Pack” player of the game. She had 18 points. Taiysa Worsfold (5th year, forward, Kamloops, BC) added 17 points while Leilani Carney (1st year, guard, Vancouver, BC) had 16 and Michelle Bos (2nd year, guard, Surrey, BC) contributed 11—all in the second half.

“I thought Taiysa was incredible tonight,’ Ferguson stated. “She dropped five for nine on threes. Kassie Colonna worked really hard on defense and ran the floor really hard and made their posts work hard. Leilani Carney came out early and gave us a bit of a spark. Bos had double digits. It was really a team effort tonight. Kenesha Reeves (2nd year, guard, Kamloops, BC) and Emma Piggin (2nd year, guard, Kamloops, BC) contributed as well.”

UNBC was down to seven players at one point of the basketball game due to injury. Vasiliki Louka (2nd year, post, Athens, Greece) had 22 points. Eleni Steriopoulou (2nd year, guard, Athens, Greece) added 11 points with Hanna Pudlas (2nd year, guard, Prince George, BC) contributing 10. Jasprit Nijjar (4th year, post, Vancouver, BC) had 13 rebounds (11 on defense) while Kylie Pozniak (3rd year, guard, Calgary, AB) added 11 points.

The WolfPack hit the road for the final time in the Canada West regular season next week (Feb 12-13) as they visit the Cascades at the University of Fraser Valley. The Timberwolves will entertain the Mount Royal Cougars.

TRU closes out the regular campaign at home on Feb 19-20 when the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat. Tip off on Feb 19 th at the Tournament Capital Centre will be 6 pm.
