KAMLOOPS – The Kamloops Legacy Wheelchair Tennis Tournament is underway at the Kamloops Tennis Centre, located at 758 Front St.

Beginning Friday (July 5), 24 players from Canada and around the globe are competing for the $3,000 prize and the top spot at Kamloops’ annual tournament.

Michelle McDonell, executive director for the BC Wheelchair Sports Association, said the event started nine years ago as a legacy of the Canada Summer Games.

“It’s part of the Uniqlo Wheelchair Tennis Tour, which is an international tour that features wheelchair tennis players who are competing for prize money and world ranking points,” said McDonell, adding that the tournament gives entry-level professional athletes more court time and is often used as a stepping stone to the Paralympic Games.

“We’re part of a big circuit in Canada, so we hope to give people opportunities to play. We would love people to come out and watch,” she said.

“I think the athleticism that our athletes show is really incredible and it’s really something that you can’t see all the time, so it’s a great opportunity this weekend.”

The tournament semifinals start Saturday morning with the finals slated for Sunday. Matches start at 8:30 a.m. and are free to attend.
