KAMLOOPS — This weekend, the Kamloops RCMP plans to have an increased presence in the community, as there will a number of community events taking place throughout the city.

Canada Day always seems to draw large crowds of people down to Riverside Park, and with the Kamloopa PowWow also slated for the weekend, there will likely be thousands of people out and about to take in the events.

At the Powwow grounds, the BC RCMP Indigenous Policing Service will have a special presence.

“We will be hosting Coffee with a Cop, and that’s on Saturday and Sunday afternoons,” Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Crystal Evelyn explains. “That’s an opportunity if you’ve been thinking about policing, to have a one-on-one chat with a recruiter, but also just an opportunity to get to know who’s policing our community. There’s going to be other police officers there – you might have some generalized questions or you might just want to make a connection.”

While there is a recruitment element to Coffee with a Cop, Corporal Evelyn says the event is open to members of the public who may be interested in asking questions and are looking for a complimentary iced tea or iced coffee at the powwow this weekend.

“Some of it is recruiting and some of it just building those community partnerships with the people who were trying to keep safe,” Cpl. Evelyn explains. “We’ve set aside this time when we’re not distracted with a call we’re going to and we’re available to help.”
