Wild spring break at BC Wildlife Park

KAMLOOPS – Kids are out of school this week and next for spring break, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t learning anything. The BC Wildlife Park is hosting day camps for kids, each day with a different theme.

Today’s theme was “What’s that smell?” and the kids got up close and personal with some stinky creatures.

One stinky animal the group met was Karina, a rubber boa snake.

“I love snakes, I love reptiles. I study them a lot in school,” day camper Leah Morris told CFJC News. “I just really love animals, so that’s why my parents thought this would be a good thing for me.”

Kids like Leah, aged six-to-10 years old met and learned about different animals, played games and rode the train around the BC Wildlife Park, making for a wild start to spring break.

“Each day of kids camp has a theme, so today’s theme is, ‘What’s that smell?’ We learn about stinky animals in the education program,” said Education and Volunteer Assistant Sam McNeil.

According to McNeil, they do at least one animal encounter a day with the kids. Through the animal encounters the children meet and learn about an animal who lives at the park.

The kids also learn about that animal’s habitat, diet and how they protect themselves from predators.

“Rubber boas act like their tail is their head when they’re frightened and if… whatever is threatening doesn’t go away, then they’ll produce a bad smell,” another camper, Sophia Koedooder said.

The kids seemed to have a blast while learning a lot.

BC Wildlife Park camps run each weekday from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. during spring break.
