Valleyview shooting: RCMP looking for witnesses, video

Mar 13, 2023 | 4:20 PM

KAMLOOPS – Kamloops RCMP is looking for witnesses and dashcam footage related to a weekend shooting in Valleyview.

According to police, officers responded to a motel in the 1800-block of the East Trans Canada Highway at 8:25 a.m. Sunday (Mar. 12), for a report of a person who was struck by a vehicle.

“Upon further investigation, it was actually revealed that the person was suffering from multiple gunshot injuries,” Cpl. Crystal Evelyn from the Kamloops RCMP said. “They were taken to the hospital – with injuries that are believed to be non-life-threatening.”

RCMP said the victim is known to police and the incident is believed to be targeted.

Evelyn said one person was arrested in relation to the shooting but was later released the same day.

“The Kamloops RCMP detachment is very aware that this type of gun violence is extremely and rightfully concerning to the public,” said Superintendent Jeff Pelley in a news release, adding that this shooting and the one in late February on McGill Road are not random acts of violence. “These investigations are of the highest priority to us and we continue to work not just on advancing them independently, but strategizing to reduce their presence and hold those responsible to account.”

A police presence remains at the Tournament Inn as officers work to secure search warrants as part of the ongoing investigation.

Members of the public are being asked to review any dashcam or surveillance video they might have for information related to the incident.

“We’re also asking people to too, be on the lookout for suspicious activity that could be related to the illegal drug trade that seems to be prompting some of this targeted violence in the community,” Evelyn told CFJC News.

Anyone who witnessed, has video, or information about this incident is asked to contact police as soon as possible at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2023-8311.
