KAMLOOPS — During a visit to Kamloops yesterday at Royal Inland Hospital, B.C.’s Health Minister provided an update on the status of a future cancer care centre for the city.

The government-promised facility is currently in the preliminary planning stages. Adrian Dix says the centre is going to look a lot like the cancer centre in Victoria and other cities, and the site will be somewhere on the hospital campus.

“And in the meantime, it’s developing and preparing for the services. And to be clear, we need the services anyway,” Dix explains, “So the question is, should they be situated more in Kelowna, or more in Vancouver, or more in Surrey or whether we should have services in Kamloops, and I believe we should have services here, but you have to build out your teams to do that, and that’s what we’re going to do.”

Once the centre is operational, Dix says the need for interior residents to travel to Kelowna or Vancouver for certain cancer services won’t be eradicated completely, but it will be greatly reduced.

“People are still going to have to travel sometimes for cancer care. They are. From Williams Lake or from other places, but that travel itself will be shorter and I think that’s important.” notes Dix, “But Kamloops should have a cancer centre, I feel that strongly, and we’re just working to see that that happens.”
