SOUND OFF: Vax for BC: Getting vaccinated in Kamloops easier than ever

Aug 4, 2021 | 9:24 AM

IN THE PAST FEW MONTHS, millions of British Columbians have stepped up to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Because of these efforts, we have been able to reduce transmission of COVID-19 in our communities, restart our local economies, and get back to doing more of the things we love.

We have made tremendous progress together in our efforts to get vaccinated, however, we still need to ensure that vaccinations are accessible to all those who want them. We also want to ensure that barriers are minimized for those who are dealing with anxiety, questions, or uncertainty.

This is why we have launched the Vax for BC campaign – to get first and second dose vaccines to as many people as possible through new and unique ways. Starting today and for the next few weeks, our local health authorities are making it even easier for people throughout B.C. to get vaccinated, helping protect themselves and their loved ones against COVID-19.

Today, known as Walk-in Wednesday, 20,000 shots will be available at vaccination clinics across the province. This means you don’t need to register online or by phone before you arrive. You can just walk-in. You should bring photo ID to the clinic, and if you’re getting dose 2, you are also encouraged to bring your immunization record card from your first dose.

In Kamloops, there will be a drop-in clinic at Tournament Capital Centre and a mobile immunization clinic at Sun Peaks Centre to offer people the chance to get their vaccine at a time that works best for them.

During Vax For BC, people will also be able to show gratitude to the frontline workers and healthcare workers who have supported us all tirelessly throughout this pandemic, by sharing messages of thanks online and at vaccination clinics.

We know there are many reasons someone might not have rolled up their sleeves just yet. Some people have struggled to find a convenient time in their day to get vaccinated, while others may be hesitant to get the vaccine.

As an MLA and a nurse, I’ve been proud to be a part of the team giving vaccinations in my community. I will never get tired of seeing the joy and relief on peoples’ faces when they finally get vaccinated against this virus.

The vaccines we have in B.C. are safe, effective, and are saving lives throughout the province every day. People who have received two doses of vaccine are significantly less likely to contract COVID-19, and if they do, they are less likely to be hospitalised and suffer severe illness. If you haven’t taken this step to protect yourself yet, now is the time.

Cases have been increasing in B.C.’s interior region over the past weeks, and this has had an impact on people, communities, and businesses. However, we are fortunate to have the tools we need to minimize these impacts and our most important tool is vaccination.

The more people who are vaccinated against COVID-19, the more protected all of us are against the virus.

This week, I encourage you to get vaccinated if you have not already done so and help others in your life to do the same.
