Two dead in crash near Barriere

BARRIERE, B.C. — Two people have died in a highway crash north of Barriere.

According to Cpl. Mike Halskov of the BC RCMP E-Division Traffic Services, emergency crews were called to the scene just after 12:00 noon. The crash took place near Darfield on the Yellowhead Highway.

Halskov says a semi-truck collided with a passenger vehicle. Though details are slim, two people were confirmed dead.

Halskov adds the road will likely remain closed for much of the afternoon while investigators handle the scene.

“It likely will (remain closed) until the road is safe for travel as well, as I imagine there is vehicle debris and things like that that need to be addressed. There will be flaggers sent to the scene to direct traffic,” he said.

Investigators say it’s too soon to settle on a cause, but roads are very treacherous as snow continues to fall.

“This winter, we’ve been walloped pretty hard with some winter conditions that have made driving very challenging in parts of our province, including the Interior,” Halksov said. “We just remind drivers to slow down and drive according to road and weather conditions. If it’s too bad out there, consider delaying your travel plans until a better time.”
