Season 16 may be the final Grey’s Anatomy. Star Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey on the ABC drama, told Entertainment Weekly: “I’m clearly not prepared right now to make any formal announcement about what my future is on the show, but I am really feeling like we have told the majority of the stories that we can tell. It’s about time that I mix it up. I’m definitely looking for a change.”

But fans shouldn’t panic yet; her contract runs through the 16thseason, which doesn’t wrap until 2020.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 15 premieres September 27 on ABC.

FAST FACTS:

  • The show’s creator, the indomitable Shonda Rhimes, handed off showrunning duties last season to EP Krista Vernoff. But she would return to pen the last episode.
  • “I have written the end of the show at least six times,” Rhimes told EW. “But we just don’t end. Every time I thought, ‘This is how the show should end,’ we’ve gone past those moments, so I’ve stopped trying. I have no idea now.”
  • In late 2017, Pompeo signed a $20 million+ annual contract to keep her on GA through season 16. It made her the highest-paid star in dramatic television.
