Rose McGowan Wants Open Dialogue on Suicide and Depression

Rose McGowan issued an open letter addressing late chef Anthony Bourdain and his girlfriend Asia Argento, their relationship and the need for more intervention when it came to depression and suicide.

McGowan and Argento have grown close in the past several months since they joined the dozens of women in accusing Harvey Weinstein of misconduct. Until his suicide on Friday, Bourdain championed both women and the #MeToo movement that has grown out of their activism.

• “Dear Fellow Humans,” she wrote in an open letter. “Sitting across from me is the remarkable human and brave survivor, Asia Argento, who has been through more than most could stand, and yet stand she does. She stood up to her monster rapist and now she has to stand up to yet another monster, suicide. The suicide of her beloved lover and ally, Anthony Bourdain.”
• “I write these truths because I have been asked to. I know so many around the world thought of Anthony Bourdain as a friend and when a friend dies, it hurts. Many of these people who lost their ‘friend’ are wanting to lash out and blame. You must not sink to that level. Suicide is a horrible choice, but it is that person’s choice,” she added.
• Addressing the late chef’s depression, McGowan continued, “Anthony was open with his demons, he even wrote a book about them. In the beginning of their relationship, Anthony told a mutual friend, ‘He’s never met anyone who wanted to die more than him.’ And through a lot of this last year, Asia did want the pain to stop.”
• “But here’s the thing, over their time together, thankfully, she did the work to get help, so she could stay alive and live another day for her and her children. Anthony’s depression didn’t let him, he put down his armor, and that was very much his choice. His decision, not hers. His depression won,” she remarked.
• She also said that the pair shared a “free relationship” without borders. Before his death, Argento was spotted holding hands with another man in Rome, according to TMZ.

OTTAVIA BUSIA SPEAKS OUT

• Bourdain’s ex-wife Ottavia Busia also addressed his death. The pair share Ariane Bourdain, 11, and remained amicable post-split.
• “Our little girl had her concert today,” Busia wrote to her late ex on Instagram along with a photo of Ariane at a microphone. “She was amazing. So strong and brave. She wore the boots you bought her.”
• “I hope you are having a good trip, wherever you are,” she concluded the caption.

MCGOWAN INDICTED ON COCAINE CHARGES

Meanwhile, McGowan was indicted by a grand jury on Monday for a January 2017 cocaine possession charge. However, the star thinks that Harvey Weinstein may have been responsible for a frame job. According to TMZ, the actress could face up to a year if she’s convicted. McGowan’s lawyer, Jose Baez, said in a statement: “Rose steadfastly maintains her innocence. These charges would have never been brought if it weren’t for her activism as a voice for women everywhere. I assure you, this selective prosecution will be met with a strong defense.” Last January, the 44-year-old actress was accused of possessing cocaine, which was allegedly found in a wallet by airline staff.
