Miss American Organization Celebrates Women

The Miss America Organization is putting three women in charge following an email scandal involving former male leaders at the scholarship foundation. Following the scandal former Miss Americas, including Mallory Hagan, called for the entire board to resign.

Regina Hopper will serve as president and CEO, Marjorie Vincent-Tripp will serve as chairwoman of the board and Gretchen Carlson will lead its board of trustees. Carlson has had her share of experience with organizations grappling with misconduct, having won a $20 million sexual harassment scandal against Fox News.

  • “By putting female leadership in place, we hope to send a strong signal.” Hopper, a former Miss Arkansas and an attorney, told the AP. “We want young women to see Miss America as a place where they can come and benefit and be empowered.”
  • Hopper replaces Sam Haskell, whose emails deriding the intellect, appearance and sex lives of former Miss Americas led to his ouster in December. Hopper has previously worked as a correspondent for CBS News, and won an Emmy for her work on 48 Hours.
  • Many of the emails centered on Hagan, the winner of the 2013 pageant. They claimed Hagan had gained weight after winning and speculated about how many men she had sex with. In one, they speculated that she was “preparing for her new career … as a blimp in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade,” and questioned whether the people in the email chain were the only ones who hadn’t had sex with her.
  • Haskell agreed to step down, even as he lashed out at the Huffington Post for publishing a story that he deems “unkind and untrue.”
  • Vincent-Tripp was crowned Miss America in 1991 and is an assistant attorney general in Florida. Carlson was crowned Miss America in 1989 and was officially named chairwoman in January.
