John Cena’s Tough Breakup

After announcing his split with Nikki Bella on Sunday in a joint statement, John Cena spoke again on Twitter Monday. The actor and wrestler sounded down, but stoic.

“Hardship, loss, and humility are extremely difficult waters to navigate,” he tweeted on Monday, “but perseverance thru them builds a strength to withstand anything life throws your way.”

• It seems Cena has been doing some reading to cope with his loss. On Sunday, the WWE star threw out a quote from Walt Whitman, writing: “Keep your face always toward the sunshine-and shadows will fall behind you.”
• “Anybody feeling down, check out #WaltWhiteman,” he tweeted along with the quote, “has always been a helpful voice in times of crisis. Beautifully, wild thinker and was certainly onto something with ideas like these.”
• Cena, 40, was previously married to Elizabeth Huberdeau. In April of 2017, he got down on one knee and proposed to Bella in front of millions of fans on TV. However, a source tells People that he got cold feet as the date of their wedding (May 5^th) drew near.
• An insider tells People that Bella is “devastated” over the split.
• “She never gave him an ultimatum. He talked a really good game about having changed, about having his priorities straight, about knowing what’s important, and that it was her. But as the day got closer, it was like he just went back to who he’s always been – which is someone who puts himself first, always,” the insider says. “He’s an incredibly dedicated, driven, ambitious guy. And for the longest time he said he didn’t think he had room in his life for a spouse or kids. It seems like in the end that was still the truth.”
• The source continues, “But in that case, he never should’ve proposed, let alone in front of millions of people. Now she’s heartbroken.”
• Another source however, hints that she was the one who ended it over frustration that he seemed less than enthusiastic about their future. “[Nikki] doesn’t need a pity proposal, a pity wedding, a pity husband. She’s a phenomenal, tremendous woman,” the source says.
