Steven Spielberg‘s Ready Player One won the holiday box office this weekend, earning $53.2 million over four days after a $15.8M Saturday that was up 4% over Friday. About 35% of the earnings came from 3D showings.

Friday-Sunday, the film earned $41.2 million, making it one of Spielberg’s top opening weekends, behind Indiana Jones 4 ($100m in 2008), The Lost World: Jurassic Park ($74m in 1997), War of the Worlds ($64m in 2005) and Jurassic Park ($50m in 1993).

  • The $41.2 million Friday-Sunday debut is also the second-largest opening this year after the mighty Black Panther, which landed five times that, at $201M+.
  • While those numbers give studio honchos a lot to smile about, according to ComScore, overall box office is down 3.7% year-to-date.
