Portugal, the Man Will Be Honored

Portgual. the Man will be honored with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers’ Vanguard Award at the 35th annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards, held April 23rd in Los Angeles. The Vanguard Award is given to artists who are “shaping the future of American music.”

Previous winners include Arcade Fire, Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails, Beck and The Killers.

Lana Del Rey will be honored with the ASCAP Global Impact Award. Legendary hitmaker and Songwriters Hall of Fame member Desmond Child will be honored with the ASCAP Founders Award.

“Portugal. the Man have transformed their electrically charged psychedelic rock into a platform for their earnest take on the state of the world,” says ASCAP President Paul Williams. He adds, “They have honed a sound that has achieved massive success without compromise, and it is our honor to bestow them with the ASCAP Vanguard Award, which recognizes their unique ability to keep pushing music forward.”

Of Lana, Williams commented: “Although Lana Del Rey is the recipient of the ASCAP Global Impact Award this year, her sparkling soundscapes and crisp storytelling are anything but of this world. Lana’s art allows us to step into a technicolor dream, where endless possibility is the only rule. Lana casts an ethereal glow across all she touches, leaving us all excited for whatever spellbinding path she ventures on next.:

Child, who is celebrating his 40th anniversary as an ASCAP member, has written more than 80 Top 40 hits, including Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ On A Prayer” and “You Give Love A Bad Name,” Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” Kiss’s “I Was Made For Lovin’ You,” and Aerosmith’s “Dude (Looks Like A Lady)” and “Angel.” Child’s songwriting and/or production credits have also appeared on projects by artists including Cher, Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Garth Brooks, Sia, Selena Gomez, Michael Bolton, Joan Jett and several others.
