Charlie Puth Says Selena Messed Him Up

Charlie Puth says his relationship with Selena Gomez “really” messed him up. The 26-year-old singer said in the February 3rd issue of Billboard that his “short-lived” but “impactful” fling with Gomez ended because the former Disney Channel star was hung up on someone else.

Puth was linked to Gomez in 2016 after collaborating with the 25-year-old singer and actress on the single “We Don’t Talk Anymore.” The song appears on Puth’s debut studio album, Nine Track Mind.

“It’s about a particular moment in my life, when someone very close to me wanted the attention of somebody else,” Puth shared. “When I found that out and we ended it, I might have done some shady things too, and she might have asked me, ‘How long has this been going on?’”

“I don’t kiss and tell, but the only way a song like that can come across as real is if there’s something else going on behind the scenes,” he said. “And that’s what was happening [with Gomez]. Very short-lived, very small, but very impactful. And it really messed me up.”

“I’m trying to put this the best way possible: it wasn’t like I was the only person on her mind,” the star explained. “And I think I knew that going in – what I was getting myself into.”

Gomez split from Justin Bieber in 2014 after several years of on-again, off-again dating. The pair reconnected in October following Gomez’s breakup with The Weeknd, and were spotted together at Bieber’s hockey game Wednesday in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, Puth is sharing an inside look at his time in the studio with legendary R&B vocal group Boyz II Men. The third track released from Puth’s forthcoming sophomore album Voicenotes (out May 11th), their collaboration “If You Leave Me Now” was praised as “a timeless love ballad” by Vibe and “Puth’s most straightforward R&B cut to date” by Entertainment Weekly.

Voicenotes, Puth’s highly-anticipated follow-up to 2016’s RIAA-certified platinum debut album Nine Track Mind, also features his RIAA-certified 2x platinum selling smash “Attention” & current single “How Long” – the latter of which is continuing to climb within the Top 10 on both Hot AC and Top 40 radio formats.

Puth has been announced as a performer at the 2018 iHeartRadio Awards, airing live from Los Angeles on March 11th. This summer will also see Puth embark on his biggest North American headline tour to date. The Voicenotes Tour with special guest Hailee Steinfeld kicks off July 11th in Toronto.
