COLLINS: 'Fairness' is not a word I would use to describe the federal budget
THE DAY AFTER the 'Fairness' budget was presented Tuesday (Apr. 16), Prime Minister Trudeau talked about how his budget was going to give priority to the millennials and Gen-Xers who are up against the wall. He said they weren't getting the same breaks as their parents and grandparents got. What a crock of crap. As the ...

COLLINS: The changing face of business
WE ARE SPENDING A LOT OF TIME these days dealing with change. Trying to determine the best way to tackle the homeless crisis, the rent and ownership crisis, the health crisis - and the list goes on. Here's another thing cities are wrestling with - the changing face of downtowns, how to deal with mass changes in philoso...

COLLINS: When do we say, 'enough already?'
AT SOME POINT, there has to be a line drawn in the sand to distinguish between the needs of an individual over the needs of society as a whole. I have always had empathy for those who are marginalized, whether they be addicts, homeless, seniors, Indigenous peoples and others struggling through difficult times. But I fe...

COLLINS: How safe do we feel?
IF WE PUT ASIDE ALL OF THE HYPE at city council over the McCorkell saga and the mayor's diatribe about the need for "change," let's look at the real issue here - how safe do we really feel we are versus statistics that try to show the real picture? How safe we feel we are is more important than the statistics....

COLLINS: Council meeting Tuesday could be tumultuous - or not
IF THE CITY WAS SMART, it would book Sandman Centre for next Tuesday's council meeting and sell tickets. We could make a lot of money to pay back the money we've spent on the infighting at city hall. Of course, because it's a personnel issue, much of any debate will likely be behind closed doors. The mayor is creating m...

COLLINS: Anyone expecting positive news from Henry Braun's report?
IN A COUPLE OF MONTHS, Henry Braun will be presenting a report to the province in his efforts to ease the tensions around the Kamloops council table. Most of you will likely say, "Henry who?"Henry Braun was appointed by the government earlier this year after the city requested some help to calm things down af...

COLLINS: I can't believe I'm agreeing with The Donald
I MUST BE CAUGHT UP in a transformation of some sort. Fitting weekend for that to happen, I suppose.I don't agree with Donald Trump about anything. His thoughts are almost totally out of sync with reality. To me, he represents the worst the world has to offer. But his comments recently about NATO countries and their de...

COLLINS: Why spend money on things that won't be used
ALL OF US WANT TO FEEL SAFE and secure in our lives. We want to have a decent place to live. We would like to feel like we can leave our home safely for a couple of days without fear of it being broken into. And we would like to feel free to enjoy the beauty of our city. But sometimes you wonder whether that's possible...

COLLINS: The dangers of neglecting women and LGBTQ2S+ members of society
WHILE THERE ARE INCREASING CONCERNS about a rise in anti-Semitism and general hatred and violence, gender-related issues are of the most concern to me. Women have faced erosion of their basic rights in the past few years - rights that have taken centuries to obtain. Women are still being abused, trafficked, forced into...

COLLINS: It's almost too late to prepare for wildfire season
IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY NOTICED, temperatures are rising. An early spring has started. While most of us are preparing for a return to warmer weather, we pay relatively little attention to the consequences of an early warming trend. Extremely low snowpacks mean another round of drought will hit, heavy sprinkling regulati...

COLLINS: Government often has the power at election time
DURING THE TIME LEADING UP to an election, the government almost always has the hammer. As promises are made, we have to determine whether they are believable. And when the government makes them, they seem more believable because the government actually has the power to bring them to fruition. Opposition promises come ...

COLLINS: Southern evangelical Christians make a deal with the devil
ACCORDING TO A COLUMN in USA Today this week, southern evangelical Christians are flocking to Donald Trump in record numbers. Most of my life has been centered around my faith. And I have a great deal of difficulty wondering why a group of people who proclaim to believe in the Bible would align themselves with a man wi...

ARE YOU READY FOR THE ONSLAUGHT? I hope so.For the next seven months we will hear all of the promises you could want to hear about who will do what for you and why they are the ones you should vote for in October. You can't govern without a plan - some guidelines about what you want to accomplish. But bringing those pl...

COLLINS: Supplemental budget items need another look
KAMLOOPS COUNCIL IS TRYING HARD to lighten the load on taxpayers by discussing whether or not they should cut back on some of the budget items that will lead us to an approximately 11 per cent tax hike this year. Coupled with other rising costs and the possibility of going to a referendum to finance various cultural an...

COLLINS: Traffic problems at First and Victoria won't be easily resolved
THE CITY OF KAMLOOPS is making yet another attempt to resolve traffic problems at First Avenue and Victoria Street. I wish them luck. These latest proposals to muck up the long-standing issues will not do the trick. The only thing that will work in the long run is a big expenditure to totally revamp that whole area, wi...

COLLINS: Education in a rapidly changing world
EVERY WEEK, I receive a report from School District 73 Superintendent Rhonda Nixon. I think I get this because I am on the emergency contact list for my grandchild. At any rate, I am most appreciative to receive this, because it's a treasure trove of what's happening throughout the district. As the Superintendent trave...

COLLINS: Older people are starting to believe the golden years don't start until you're dead
SENIORS ARE PERHAPS THE MOST FORGOTTEN GROUP in today's society. Every day, we see the tragedy that faces seniors. Old people left to literally rot away in a bed where they get little real care. No one comes to see them, they seldom get out, their systems start to shut down, and eventually someone checks on them and fi...

COLLINS: Council getting a lot done amid the crap
THIS PAST WEEK GOING THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA, I saw a comment that made a lot of sense. I wasn't able to find it again, but the essence of the comment was that we were spending way too much time talking about the infighting at City Hall. This person said they didn't care about the bickering - they were more interested in ...
