B.C. cabinet needs shuffling, starting with Trevena

KAMLOOPS — CABINETS ARE MEANT to be shuffled, and it’s time for one in B.C.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau did it in Ottawa last week. Now it’s John Horgan’s turn.

At the one-year anniversary of the appointment of this province’s executive council, most of them remain anonymous. If you went out on the street and asked people how many of our provincial cabinet ministers they know, most would be stumped to name more than a couple.

Maybe Adrian Dix and Carole James, or David Eby. But who are George Heyman, Scott Fraser and Bruce Ralston?

Lately, people certainly know about Claire Trevena, Horgan’s hapless transportation minister.

In 12 months she’s wracked up a trifecta of major failures.

Last week she announced that ride-sharing, promised for 2017, then put off till this year, will now be delayed at least until next year.

Living without Uber or Lyft isn’t a big deal in Kamloops but in the Lower Mainland the talk shows have been going nuts over it. Even Trevena admits it’s taking too long.

Then there’s the lack of progress on the Trans Canada Highway east of Kamloops. The BC Liberals made good progress on construction but the project is now on pause.

The apparent reason is Horgan’s plan to take over the management of contracts on major projects and force all contractors to hire union workers.

Both of these delays, however, pale in comparison to the Greyhound fiasco. The province will soon be without the inter-city bus service relied on by British Columbians for generations.

Greyhound’s cuts to rural service announced months ago should have been a clear signal that drastic measures were needed, but when the axe fell on the entire service in B.C. ,Trevena was totally unprepared.

If no cabinet shuffle is in the offing, Horgan at the least has to get rid of Trevena and bring in somebody who can start getting things done.
