SALMON ARM, BC — UPDATE: One man is in police custody after a fatal shooting in Salmon Arm this afternoon (April 14th).

In a release, Salmon Arm RCMP say they responded to a possible shooting at a church on 5th Avenue SW before 11 a.m.

The church had been hosting an event when a man entered the building and shot two of the parishioners.

Police arrived on scene to find two people seriously wounded who required urgent medical assistance.

One of the victims was declared deceased at the scene, while the other was taken to hospital by a BC Emergency Health Service air ambulance in stable condition.

RCMP have notified the BC Coroners Service and the next of kin notifications have been completed.

No other information is being released about the victims at this time.

In the meantime, a 25-year-old man was taken into custody after being wrestled to the ground by a number of the parishioners and a rifle has been seized.

He remains in police custody with charges pending.

"While the investigation is in the preliminary stages, there is no information to suggest there are any ongoing threats to public safety.  Police have determined that at least one of the victims was known to the suspect, and it is not believed at this time the event was religiously motivated", says S/Sgt Scott West, Salmon Arm RCMP Detachment Commander.

Salmon Arm RCMP, with the assistance of the Southeast District Major Crime Unit, are conducting the investigation, and Victim Services has been called in to assist with people impacted by the incident.
