KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops has awarded the contract for a major road and infrastructure reconstruction project to a local company.

Extreme Excavating has won the $13 million contract to build improvements into Victoria Street West.

The major project spanning from the Overlanders Bridge to Seymour Street West is expected to begin next month and take until fall of 2020 to complete.

It involves digging up the road and replacing century-old underground infrastructure, such as water, sanitary and storm sewer pipes.

The project will also add beautification elements and improve pedestrian safety on the corridor.

In a news release, City of Kamloops Civic Operations Director Jen Fretz says residents and commuters can expect delays, but one lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained throughout the project.

Fretz says the City is encouraging commuters to take alternate routes or consider other modes of transportation, such as carpooling or transit, to minimize congestion and delays.

The City is also pledging to keep businesses along Victoria Street West well informed as to what’s happening with the project.

Those interested in the project and its design are invited to an informational drop-in session next Thursday, March 14, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at St. Andrews on the Square.
