Blazers give up two late goals, lose to the Giants

KAMLOOPS — It was another frustrating loss for the Blazers in a close playoff race, falling 3-1 to the Vancouver Giants.

Vancouver scored the only goal in the first period when Tristan Nielson put the puck to the front from behind the net, and Lukas Svejkovsky beat Dylan Ferguson.

After some back and forth action in the first half of the second, Connor Zary capitalized on a Blazers power play from Quinn Schmiemann and Kyrell Sopotyk, to make it 1-1 through two.

The Blazers came close to taking the lead early in the third when a Schmiemann shot went off the goal post.

With just over seven minutes left the Blazers killed off a penalty to Martin Lang, but two seconds after lang came out of the box Tristen Nielsen scored to put the Giants up 2-1.

There was another penalty to Kamloops — Kyrell Sopotyk for slashing — and eleven seconds into the power play Nielsen had his second goal and third point of the night.

Two goals a minute and 58 seconds apart took most of any momentum out of the Blazers sails, and the Giants skate away with a 3-1 win to go 5-and-0 against Kamloops this season.

Three of the five losses have been by one goal, one of those in overtime and another in a shootout, and tonight’s two-goal loss that had the Blazers still in it until late in the third.

Kamloops remains a point behind Seattle for the second wild card and drops four points behind Kelowna for third place in the B.C. Division after the Rockets defeated Prince George 4-3.

The Blazers and Rockets will meet tomorrow night at the Sandman Centre.
