Walsh, Movie Mart cited for eight Worksafe violations in wake of robberies

KAMLOOPS — A store owned by a Kamloops city councillor has been cited for eight violations after a Worksafe BC inspection.

Movie Mart, owned by Councillor Denis Walsh, has been robbed twice since the beginning of this year.

Worksafe inspectors conducted an audit of the business on January 24, 2019.

It found eight violations, and will require Walsh to take action on each of them.

• Monthly health and safety meetings are not being carried out and recorded
• The employer did not ensure that 13 specific topics were included in the young or new worker’s orientation and training, as listed by Worksafe BC.
• A first aid kit was not available on-site
• This employer did not develop and implement a written procedure for checking the well-being of a worker assigned to work alone or in isolation
• The employer has failed to establish procedures, policies or work environment arrangements to minimize the risk of violence
• This employer did not have policies and procedures on how workers identify bullying and harassment in the workplace, how workers are to report incidents of bullying and harassment, and how the employer will investigate incidents of bullying and harassment
• This employer has not provided training to workers on policies and procedures for bullying and harassment in the workplace
• A two step portable ladder does not meet and has not been used in accordance with the applicable CSA or ANSI standard
