Lajoie says ‘dangerous’ hit on Schmiemann doesn’t belong in hockey

KAMLOOPS — Blazers defenseman Quinn Schmiemann is out of the line-up for the near future, missing the three-game weekend coming up at the very least after he was hit from behind in the third period of Sunday’s 3-2 overtime win in Prince George.

On Tuesday, the man who hit Schmiemann, Cougars’ forward Josh Maser, was handed a three-game suspension by the Western Hockey League. Blazers head coach Serge Lajoie says hits like Maser’s don’t belong in the game.

“It was a situation and a play that should’ve been called on the ice, should’ve been penalized,” said Lajoie. “To what extent in the heat of the battle, you never know, but upon watching video I think it’s something we want to make sure we’re continuing to educate our players that that’s a dangerous play.”
