No complaints over Coquihalla maintenance amidst mild winter: Merritt mayor

KAMLOOPS — With a milder winter thus far, driving the Coquihalla has been a little more tame than it usually is. However, Merritt’s new mayor says she still plans to speak to the Transportation Ministry about maintenance standards when snow returns to the treacherous winter highway.

Linda Brown says the area has been lucky this winter. While the City of Merritt has received numerous phone calls and emails in the past about Coquihalla maintainance, this year has been different with no complaints.

Brown, however, says she’ll keep the lines of communication open with the province, as well as VSA Maintainence that’s responsible for clearing snow off area highways, if issues need to be solved.

“One thing I’ve said to VSA is if there are issues I would approach them first and I would talk to them about some of the issues,” she noted to CFJC Today on Monday. “I think some of the issues we’re having are not so much with VSA, but with the criteria in the ministry’s guidelines for the operators. So the operator is doing well with the ministry, so it’s got to be the guidelines we’re looking at, not so much the operator.”
