Record-breaking temperature, high winds in store for Kamloops today

KAMLOOPS — Today could be the warmest Dec. 14 on record in Kamloops, with forecast highs in the double digits.

“The warmest it’s been in Kamloops with records going back to 1890 on Dec. 14, is 9.9 C and that’s back in 1997, and the forecast high for today is 11,” Environment Canada meteorologist Matt MacDonald says. “We’re definitely on track to beat that record.”

It’s been an unusually mild December for Kamloops so far, with only 0.6 millimetres of precipitation recorded — far off from the average of 25.4 millimetres for the month. Environment Canada is also predicting gusts of up to 70 to 80 kilometres in the city today.

But the weather won’t stay so mild for too long, MacDonald says, with a storm moving in from the coast expected to deliver some rain and plenty of wind on Saturday. He adds there’s no sign in the short-term of any snow for the city.

“There is hope in the longer range for perhaps a white Christmas,” MacDonald says. “We may just see a little bit of snow in the days leading up to Christmas. So not all hope is lost.”

A winter storm warning is in effect for the Coquihalla today, with a cold front sweeping across tonight. It’ll bring some snow, but especially very strong winds, MacDonald says, particularly between Merritt and Kamloops.

“We get a bit of a break during the day on Saturday, but that storm that’s moving in on Sunday is so mild that it’s probably going to be raining right to the top of the Coquihalla as well, so it will just be wet and windy over the weekend for the Coquihalla,” he says.

“All this mild air is with us at least for the next week, (or) week and a half but approaching winter solstace next Friday, it looks like temperatures finally start to cool, returning to kind of near seasonal values.”
