More snow in store for Coquihalla Highway

KAMLOOPS — While temperatures continue to warm up in Kamloops, it’s a different story on Southern Interior highways.

Things are expected to start off calm on the Coquihalla Highway today (Dec. 12) but a snowfall warning is still in place for the Hope to Merritt stretch. Environment Canada meteorologist Bobby Sekhon says more than 20 centimetres is expected to fall overnight and into tomorrow morning.

“It’ll actually be warming a bit and changing over to rain tomorrow, however tonight there will be some heavy snow on the Coquihalla,” Sekhon says.

There won’t be as much snow falling over the Merritt to Kamloops stretch, Sekhon says, but heavy winds could lead to reduced visibility if there are flurries.

“A good chance of flurries today and then tonight (we’ll) see some snow but no huge accumulations, and then tomorrow again a good chance of snow changing to rain, so that’s kind of the idea of Merritt to Kamloops,” he says.

Meantime in the valley bottom, much less precipitation is heading our way, and temperatures are warming with a new system coming in.

“We’re going to see highs of 9 C on Friday, which is nine degrees above normal for this time of year for the Kmaloops area, so definitely higher than normal temperatures and warmer temperatures will continue into next week as well,” Sekhon says.

He adds it’s too soon to say whether Kamloops will have a white Christmas, but roughly 55 per cent of the time the city does get one. Temperatures are expected to be dropping below zero toward the end of the month, but no firm stance yet on possible precipitation.
