VSA, JPW among winners at provincial Contractor of the Year awards

VICTORIA — A pair of Thompson-Shuswap highway contractors were winners in the province’s Contractor of the Year awards, presented last Friday.

VSA Highway Maintenance, the company responsible for maintaining most of the Coquihalla Highway, was given this year’s honour for workplace health and safety.

According to a provincial news release, the company’s project studying third-party incidents with plow trucks resulted in a significant drop in incidents.

JPW Road and Bridge has the maintenance contract for the Okanagan-Shuswap area, and won the community service award.

The company instituted a new policy giving each employee 7.5 hours of paid leave annually to volunteer in their communities.
