KAMLOOPS — Twelve officers who were the first responders to a downtown restaurant standoff earlier this year have been recognized for their work.

The annual Kamloops RCMP Awards and Recognition Ceremony was held yesterday (Nov. 28), where Supt. Syd Lecky acknowledged police officers, support workers, volunteers and citizens who have made “significant” contributions to keeping Kamloops safe.

Twelve officers who responded to a man barricading himself inside a Denny’s restaurant in August, officers and staff working in October 2017 when a suspect engaged police in multiple exchanges of gunfire, an officer who works in the schools and runs youth programs, an officer who raised funds to support fellow RCMP members in Saskatchewan after the Humboldt Broncos bus tragedy, and support staff for General Duty and the Criminal Intelligence Unit were recognized.

Tanya Johnson, a registered nurse with Car 40, Sheryl Lindquist, who helped establish the Youth Police Academy and Youth Advisory Council in School District 73, and Ally Holowatiuk, a student at North Kamloops Secondary who reached out to parents and students with her brother’s story of addiction, were all recognized as well.
