First Nations still waiting for payouts for wildfire expenses

VANCOUVER —   First Nations across B-C still haven’t been reimbursed for hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses they paid fighting wildfires in 2017 and 2018.

Chief Larry Nooski of the Nadleh Whut’en plans to raise the issue at a meeting with provincial government officials today.

His community spent 400-thousand dollars on equipment, firefighters and emergency staff this summer and still hasn’t seen a cent from the province.

Bonaparte Indian Band Chief Ryan Day says many First Nations are too impoverished to pay for fire protection for their people until a crisis strikes.
