Numbers up for Sun Peaks opening weekend

SUN PEAKS — Crowds of skiers and snowboarders flocked to Sun Peaks this weekend for the first runs of the season.

Chief Marketing Officer Aidan Kelly says all things considered, it was a great opening for the resort’s 2018-19 winter season.

“So about 4,000 people approximately in total over the weekend.”

Over the years Sun Peaks has seen a variety of low and high turnouts for opening weekends, which Kelly says is all dependent on the snow conditions and pent up demand.

“Based on the terrain that we have and everything now, this is a really positive, and really good opening for us,” He explains, “I think some people kind of came from all over the place because we’re the only option in British Columbia right now to go skiing or snowboarding.”

He adds, they are expecting another swell of visitors to come when the new Orient Chairlift opens the week before Christmas.

“We’re pretty full around the Christmas holidays anyway, but I think its definitely attracting some new attention to Sun Peaks overall and what we’re doing as a destination,” He says, “Whether its the chairlift or accommodation development, or on-mountain improvements, its garnering a lot of attention through the marketplace right now, having a lot of people taking a look at coming to Sun Peaks for trips.”

As an added incentive for those unsure about whether they want to make the trek, Kelly adds, they’ll still be offering 50% lift tickets for another few days.

“So if you don’t have to head back to work tomorrow, it’ll probably be nice and quiet up the mountain and some good skiing if you want to get up for some fun.”
