More than 30 people have died of overdose in Kamloops this year

KAMLOOPS — More than 180 people in the Interior Health Authority have died from overdose so far this year, according to new numbers from the B.C. Coroners Service.

These numbers make up a fraction of the 1,143 deaths across the province attributed to illicit drug overdoses in 2018.

In Kamloops alone, 32 people have died since the beginning of the year.

IHA has the second-highest rate of overdose deaths, at 32.2 deaths per 100,000 people — second only to the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority.

In September of this year, 19 people died from overdose in the Interior Health Authority.

Fentanyl was detected in 77 per cent of fatal overdoses, followed by cocaine at 48 per cent and meth at 32 per cent.

According to the report by the BC Coroners Service, 86 per cent of illicit drug overdose deaths occurred inside, and 13 per cent occurred outside.

There were no deaths at supervised consumption or overdose prevention sites in the province.
