KAMLOOPS — The newest tenant of the Summit Shopping Centre will be a fried chicken chain from the U.S.

Popeyes Chicken — which originally opened in New Orleans — has begun setting up shop near the Tommy Gun’s barbershop, and owner Raheel Sheikh is hoping for a December opening.

“This is the first B.C. location that’s opening up in Kamloops, we’re very excited to bring one here,” Sheikh says. “It’s one of the biggest tourist cities in B.C… because of, I believe all the hills and all the ski locations there. It’s the start, we’re just starting from here, we’re going to Vancouver, we’re going to Kelowna, covering all of the eastern ends and going to the western ends as well.”

Sheikh says roughly 50 staff members will be hired for the Kamloops location, and the company is expecting it to be a busy place.
