KAMLOOPS — Middle-income families in communities across the province — including here in Kamloops — may have a better shot at securing affordable housing.

The provincial government says in a news release that 4,900 new affordable mixed-income rental homes are part of the Building BC: Community Housing Fund, and the new homes are designed to address the need for affordable housing across a range of income levels.

In the Interior alone, 673 homes will be built. In Kamloops, three projects will lead to 199 homes with $4 million in funding to ASK Wellness for 40 senior homes, $11.2 million to the Centre for Seniors Information for 112 homes for seniors, people with disabilities, and families, and $4.7 million to Interior Community Services for 47 homes for families and seniors.

For Clearwater, a 20-home project has been allocated $2 million to Evergreen Acres Seniors Housing Society for seniors. A 40-home project in Merritt has received $4 million in funding for seniors homes through ASK Wellness.

“Years of inaction on the B.C. housing crisis left families struggling to get by and unable to get ahead,” said Premier John Horgan in the release. “These new, affordable rental homes are an important step toward addressing the housing crisis and giving families in every part of the province a break from skyrocketing housing costs.”

According to the release, individual buildings will contain units aimed at a mix of income levels, including homes for middle-income individuals and families, subsidized rentals for seniors and others on fixed incomes, and homes for low-wage workers.

The new housing fund is a $1.9 billion investment over 10 years and will build more than 14,000 affordable rental homes, according to the release. The 4,900 homes announced are the first set of projects in the province.
