Surrey RCMP say statistics don’t show a big rise in crime

SURREY — R-C-M-P in Surrey say statistics don’t necessarily back up alarm over crime in the city, where the newly elected council has put the wheels in motion to replace it with a municipal police force.
Corporal Elenore Sturko says crime in the fast-growing city has been on a ten-year decline, including violent crimes.
Sturko says publicity around some high profile shootings, including the death of two teenagers whose bodies were found on a rural road in June, may give a skewed perception of crime rates.
The new council under Mayor Doug McCallum has committed to replace the local R-C-M-P with a municipal police force in the next two years.
