Blazers GM didn’t think about making any moves during losing streak

KAMLOOPS — Blazers general manager Matt Bardsley says he didn’t panic, even while watching his team lose seven games in a row.

He says Kamloops was in five of the seven losses, and since the team has rebounded with four straight wins to be among the hottest teams in the Western Conference. Only Tri-City, with a five-game winning streak, is playing better. The streak has Kamloops in third in the B.C. Division, although tied with Prince George and only a point up on Kelowna.

The Blazers have elevated themselves to .500 through 13 games this season. But it’s the 20-game mark when Bardsley will really start to evaluate where the team’s at. He’s still a big believer in the team’s depth.

“I’ve always felt coming into the organization that this year’s team had good depth,” he said. “I still believe that, even with the losing streak. I still felt there was the depth, but I think especially these last three games on the road, our depth is what really helped us. You’re able to roll four lines, six defense.”

But even during the seven-game losing streak that spanned 16 days, Bardsley wasn’t about to shake things up so early into the season and so early into a new era.

“I haven’t really, even during the seven-game losing streak, I wasn’t looking at making moves. It goes back to, it is a process, especially having a new head coach and assistant coach. It takes time for those coaches to get to know the players, and also the other way. It takes time for the players to get comfortable with the coaches. It’s going to take a little bit of time. If you just make a change, bringing in a player, it’s going to be another month or so for that player to get comfortable with the coach. So I haven’t looked at making any moves. I believe in the players we have.”
