Leon Reinbrecht appeals criminal negligence conviction

KAMLOOPS — The B.C. Appeals Court is hearing an appeal from a man convicted of a speedboat crash that killed a houseboat operator in the Shuswap in 2010.

Leon Reinbrecht appeared in Kamloops Supreme Court today, Oct. 30, where he argued unreasonable delays in his case infringed upon his right to a timely trial.

Lawyers for Reinbrecht and a Crown prosecutor argued before three B.C. Appeals Court Justices. Crown argued that the lengthy delays in the case weren’t its burden.

It’s not yet clear when a decision on the appeal will be handed down.

Reinbrecht was convicted in 2015 of criminal negligence causing death and criminal negligence causing bodily harm in the crash that killed Ken Brown. Eight others were injured.

In June 2016, Reinbrecht was sentenced to three years in prison, and shortly after that his defence lawyer confirmed an appeal had been filed. Prior to his sentencing, Reinbrecht filed an appeal through B.C. Supreme Court, which was ultimately dismissed.
