Two prescribed burns for the Cariboo region this week

WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — Two prescribed burns are being planned for the Cariboo-Chilcotin area.

According to a news release, the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development and the BC Wildfire Service will be helping with two ecosystem restoration burns in the Cariboo Fire Centre this week.

Firefighters from the Cariboo Fire Centre will be closely monitoring the fires at all times.

A 53-hectare prescribed burn is planned for the Echo Mountain area, roughly nine kilometres southwest of Alkali Lake.

This burn could start as early as today, Oct. 22, but the decision on when to proceed will depend on weather and site conditions. Smoke from the fire may be visible from nearby communities.

A 500-hectare prescribed burn is expected to be conducted in the Crows Bar area between Canoe Creek and the Big Bar ferry on the east side of the Fraser River. The burn is expected to be ignited between Oct. 24 and Oct. 25, but once again the decision will depend on conditions.

Smoke from this fire may also be visible from neighbouring communities.

A prescribed burn is an intentionally lit fire that is planned and managed by a certified “burn boss” who is responsible for ensuring initial burn conditions are favourable, and that the fire is fully extinguished once the burn is completed.

Both of these burns will help restore native grasslands in these areas.
