KAMLOOPS — There were celebrations in other parts of the city on the first day of legalization, including at the Safe Cannabis Society on the North Shore.

A group of medical and recreational cannabis users gathered on Tranquille Road most of the day, happy this legalization day has finally come.

“Oh, it’s absolutely a wonderful day,” said Kamloops cannabis activist Carl Anderson, who’s been working on the legalization of pot for about a decade. “It’s a wonderful thing. The prohibition of cannabis was one of the worst public policies in the history of Canada. I couldn’t be happier it’s over.”

The Safe Cannabis Society has about 6,000 members but is currently operating illegally and has been for 10 years. With an application for a private store across the street, its future at the Tranquille location is up in the air.
