Williams Lake candidate cleared after illegal campaigning complaint

KAMLOOPS — RCMP have cleared a Williams Lake political candidate after a complaint of illegal campaigning.

North District RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Madonna Saunderson says police were alerted to a candidate campaigning at a seniors care facility last Thursday, October 11.

The candidate is not named.

The facility was also serving as a Special Voting Opportunities (SVO) location, and the Local Government Act prohibits candidates from campaigning at polling stations on voting days.

Saunderson says investigators interviewed residents of the care facility and reviewed legislation surrounding municipal elections.

The investigation concluded the candidate had finished campaigning before the voting station opened.
