KAMLOOPS — The provincial natural gas shortage caused by a pipeline explosion near Prince George has prompted the City of Kamloops to take action.

In a news release, civic operations director with the City Jen Fretz says effective immediately, the City is taking several steps to reduce its natural gas usage including reducing the temperature of all pools by roughly 0.6 C, reducing the temperature in all occupied buildings by 1 C, reducing the temperature in all utility and heated storage buildings to 5 C, turning off tube heaters in all arenas, and reducing the temperature of the hot water for Zambonis.

“The majority of the natural gas used by the City is for heating purposes,” said Fretz. “Therefore, we are going to make some operational changes that will immediately reduce our overall usage.”

Other than the utility and heated storage buildings, the changes will be in place for the duration of the shortage. Heat may need to be restored to the storage buildings if outside temperatures drop dramatically, in order to prevent the contents from freezing.
