Blazers name captain and leadership group

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Blazers have announced their 2018-2019 leadership group as the hockey club has named Jermaine Loewen the captain and Nolan Kneen, Zane Franklin, Luc Smith and Brodi Stuart as assistant captains.

Loewen is in his fifth season and has played 242 career games with the hockey club. The 20-year-olds from Arborg, MB had a breakout season in 2017-18 with 36 goals and 64 points. He was selected by the Dallas Stars in the 2018 NHL Draft in the seventh round.

Kneen is in his fourth season with the Blazers and recently reached the 200 career games played plateau. The 19-year-old put up a career high 37 points last season and is leading the Blazers in scoring with nine assists in his first seven games this season.

Franklin was acquired by the Blazers in July 2018 from the Lethbridge Hurricanes. The 19-year-old native of Marwayne, AB has five goals and seven points in his first seven games with the Blazers.

Smith is a veteran player in his fifth WHL season split between the Regina Pats and Kamloops Blazers. He put up a career high in 21 goals, 23 assists and 44 points last season and has played 255 career games in the WHL.

Stuart is in his second season with the Blazers after being named the hockey club’s rookie of the year with 16 goals and 38 points last season. He has four goals in his first seven games this season.

The Blazers will play two road games this weekend as they will play the Vancouver Giants on Friday night and the Everett Silvertips on Saturday night.
