Kindness kits starting to heat up as demand for warm clothes spikes

KAMLOOPS — With the weather cooling down in October, the need for warm clothing is heating up. For a second year in a row, Second Chances Thrift Store on Victoria Street is bundling and distributing kindness kits.

The kits include warm clothes for anyone in need this winter. Volunteers take the donated clothes and package them nicely for the homeless, kids and seniors. The owner of Second Chances Thrift Store, Bonnie McBride, says they’ve sold about 65 kindness kits in its first three weeks. Last year, they gave out 750 kits, and this year’s goal is to hit a thousand.

“We have never once gone out with kindness kits and not found a home for every one of them. We have agencies already this year that are asking us when we’re going to have them available,” said McBride. “One of the nice things about the way we do the kits is that we do all the work for them, so really if somebody needs some warm clothes, no one has to root through it, no one has to sort it by what works, what doesn’t, what’s suitable, what isn’t.”

The kindness kits are $5 each and all the proceeds go towards the Kamloops SPCA. McBride says there are many ways people can help this winter.

“Kits are purchased here at the store. You can either drop off gently-used clothing that’s still in really great shape, or you can come in and purchase a kit for $5,” noted McBride. “A kit comprises  an entire set of clean, warm clothes for somebody, that has been sized for them and colour-coordinated and is ready to go. Once that kit is purchased, you can either take it with you if you’d like and hand it out to somebody if you see someone that needs one, or we’ll make sure it goes to one of the social services agencies in town that works with the homeless population.”
